Murray’s Carbs provide a coil on plug kit for the Honda CX500 motorcycles; here’s an install guide.
The kit we got has a red coil – your colour may differ!

If you want a closer look at the individual components we will do a closer look article later on. This one is focusing on the install process.
Take the bolt and put it through the coil:

Install one of the nuts:

Install the second nut:

Remove the black sheath around the spring:

Install the coil to the tie down plate:

Thread it in – you’ll have to adjust the positioning of the two nuts as you go, using a 10mm spanner. The bolt uses a 5mm hex key:

Install the black rubber sheath around the spring:

Remove your rocker cover bolts:

If you haven’t done this for a while this may be a good time to adjust the vales.
Install the new rocker cover bolts. As with the stock ones, don’t tighten them up hard – you’ll feel them bottom out and you don’t need to go further:

Pull the spark plugs and grab the new end caps:

The end caps screw on:

Reinstall the plugs with the new caps in situ. Grab the bolts and washers for the tie-down aluminium strap – they take a 3mm hex drive or Allen key:

Install the plate/coil using the bolts. The orientation of the coil on plug is important – check the fitment of your tank with the plug wires pointing up, you may need to face them the other way to avoid fouling the tank:

Note that newer kits than this one have a different shape to the aluminium bar that should avoid any fouling issues. Installed (just noticed that the bolt was removed for this photo for some reason, will re-shoot):

That’s the physical installation done – stay tuned for the electrical connections…
