How to install the Rae San Hall Effect Ignition Kit – Honda CX500, GL500, CX650, GL650 – Engine Internal, Part 04
This is part four of the Rae San Hall Effect install guide – See here for the previous step or check out the overview of the process.
Grab the pair of shorter bolts, making sure that the nylon/fibre washers included in the kit are used (they allow the bolt to grip the resin):
Apply some blue threadlocker to them (eBay US, eBay AU, eBay UK, eBay CA).
Use a 4mm hex key to tighten them – not very tightly at this stage:
At this point double check the air gap all around the rotor – you want it to be consistent – and that the rotor does not touch anything.
Now, if you followed the guide for installing the electrical side of things (not yet written, soon) then you can hook the power up to the pickups from the CDI driver module. If that hasn’t been done yet you can hook power directly up to this unit – be super careful doing this though as there’s no reverse polarity protection built into the Rae San kits and getting the wires backwards will kill the unit.
In this instance we are using a 12v car battery to provide power:
Ground is green, 12V in is red. This is in the bundle of four wires – yellow, brown, red, green. DO NOT MIX THESE UP.
Once you have connected power you should see the red LED light up on the pickups:
There are two LEDs present on this unit – one for the left pickup and one for the right. When connected to the CDI driver the green LEDs on that are mirrors of the red LEDs on the pickup.
The LEDs light up when the magnet on the rotor is detected by the Hall effect pickup, so you want them to be lit between the full advance and the FR/FL marks on the flywheel for each side. It should extinguish as close as possible to the FR and FL marks for the right and left sides respectively.
Next, setting the timing in part five.
