Today I am reviewing the Motion Pro 08-0008 Universal Clutch Holding Tool (which can be found on eBay US, eBay CA, eBay AU and Amazon). I’m testing it out on a Daytona 675 motor first up, though it does work on a range of models – as one example it replaces the Harley Davidson tool number HD-91042.
The tool itself arrives like so:
Made in Taiwan:
You get a couple of stickers in the packet:
The tool itself:
Like a really strange looking set of vice grips.
Open:
The end of each arm is bent:
There are 8mm spanner pins near the bend in the arm:
The tool in use on a clutch basket:
The bent arms fit in the slots that the clutch plates usually seat into, holding it in place:
Tighten it gently the same way you would locking pliers (though keep in mind you’re locking it onto what is likely an aluminium clutch basket so don’t tighten it too hard, you don’t want to damage the clutch – just keep it from shifting) and it locks the basket in place when against the workbench (or if you feel like it, your own strength):
Once locked, you can remove the nut with a socket and breaker bar:
The tool works as expected and has stood up to a few clutch removals/installations so far without issue. It’ll open up to 5″ wide and fits square-tooth style clutch hubs – if the hubs are V-grooves or half-round it won’t work. While it won’t work on every bike there’s a large range of bikes it does work on, so if you own (or plan to own) a few makes and models chances are you’ll eventually get multiple uses out of it.
It can also double as a flywheel holder, gear holder, sprocket holder etc. – so it’s pretty flexible.
Gets the job done and not terribly expensive for a specialty tool? Gets my tick. Recommended!
