Following on from the previous page, here’s some more disassembly of the Dawn 6LQ vice. At this point the main nut and flat bar clamp are still in place underneath the static jaw:
The screw removes faily easily and the piece of flat bar comes out with it:
That just leaves the bottom of the main nut – the square visible below the screw hole:
There’s nothing holding the nut in now – simply push it up and wiggle it out:
The screws holding the jaws in place are not visible where they should be:
Dawns of this vintage use steel jaws that are screwed into threads in the cast iron from the jaw face – no sign of the heads on this particular vice…
During clean-up, there was more pitting in the sides of the vice than I usually see in Dawns:
The original red colour can be seen – barely – underneath:
The holes on the top of both sides of the vice have me curious – they weren’t like that from factory as far as I can tell and they appear to be blind holes:
After removing some of the rust the jaws do look well used:
