The oil pump filter screen should be checked and cleaned during an oil change, particularly the first oil change. If you want to do this separately you will need to drain the oil first else through the sump plug, unless you like a less controlled mess as the oil comes out all around the screen’s cover as it’s being undone.

The screen can be accessed if you take out the three bolts around the cover (part number 16523-05200) – they take an 8mm socket and are part number 01547-06208, M6x20mm:

The bolts removed:

Cover removed – part number 16523-05200 – you can see the sump plug in the center (part number 09247-14002 or 09247-14019 from KM4MJ51B661103743 onwards):

Now you can see the oil pump filter screen:

There’s an O-ring against the block – part number 09280-60005, 60.5 x 2.4mm:

The O-ring should feel perfectly round when rolled between the fingers and not appear deformed or damaged in any way. If it is damaged or not round, replace it. A new one in place:

Anyhow, back to the screen. We didn’t remove the two bolts to clean it outside of the motor as the debris that was on there came away easily;

Once it has been cleaned, ensure that the surface that the O-ring sits against is clean:

We tightened the bolts on the cover to ~14ft/lb:

Done! Remember to check for leaks once you re-fill with oil and on your test ride in case something went awry on reinstallation.
