Model History

The GL700

The GL700 was a short-run variant of the GL650 Interstate; it is said that only 800 were made in Japan, with an unknown number being imported to other countries as the years went by. Most were painted in the Wineberry colour, though there are reports of factory white bikes being made. There are some differences reported between the GL650 Interstates and the GL700s, as per this link:

  • The fairing pockets in the GL700 have weights in the base, which the GL650 lacks
  • The rear of the headlight on a GL650 has an adjustment knob, which on the GL700 is covered with a moulded rubber piece
  • The fairing and saddlebags of the GL700 have matte black Honda badges on the side, where the GL650 has reflective badges
  • The airbox of the GL700 has a hole-punched plate over the internal mesh anti-backfire screen, where the GL650 only has the mesh screen
  • The airbox plenum leading to the carburetors is different between the two models
  • The GL650 has an accelerator pump on the carbs, which the GL700 lacks
  • The tail-light lenses have different patterning
  • The pannier support brackets which connect to the footpegs are different
  • The fuel caps are different
  • The petcocks are different
  • The number plate holders are different
  • The air fork caps are unpainted on the GL650 and painted black on the GL700
  • The fork braces are different
  • The front wheels are different – the bolt that holds the rotors onto the wheel are twice as long on the GL700
  • The GL650 side covers say “SilverWing”, the GL700 “Wing Interstate”
  • The engine badges say GL650 for the GL650, and HONDA for the GL700
  • The wiring harness and handlebar switches are different
  • The speedometers are different – the GL700 reads in KM only and has a warning light if you exceed 85km/hr (at the time of production 80km/hr was the max speed in Japan!)
  • The left vertical fairing pocket blanking plate screws in on the GL650, where the GL700 uses push-snaps to affix it

If we can find any more info on the differences we will add it here. More info to come!
