Today I’m restoring and reviewing a Dawn vintage quick action vice – the 6LQ, which is product number 9027. It’s 36.3kg and stands about 10 inches tall. It’s jaws are 6-inchs, and this quick release model shows up in their 1969 catalogue – page 3 – and while a similar style vice is featured in their 1972 catalogue the LQ and SQ models have been dropped for the SQA (9028) which is a different casting at 46.8kg.
The review is broken up into six parts as there were too many photos to put it all on one page. The vice as I found it:
The quick release handle is underneath the usual one:
6LQ is cast into the side of the slide:
…and “Dawn” in each side of the static jaw:
The screw slid out from the dynamic jaw with no resistance:
The screw has undercut buttress threads:
That’s certainly quite different to all of the other Dawn vices I have cleaned up to date. There’s a hole in the end – I’m guessing that there’s a cotter pin or similar that is missing:
The dynamic jaw slid out to reveal this on the underside:
