A hair under 17cm or so. Before pulling it down for a final clean up and lubrication - I'm using Castrol Spheerol LMM at the moment - I did a video of how the quick release works in practice:

In use the quick release is very handy - even working on some rectangular hollow tube, rotating between the faces becomes the work of a second rather than a much slower spin of the screw in or out. The vice seems to hold well for the normal kind of use I would put a vice through, even with the half-nut rather than the full - though I would expect that it would not be as strong as a standard type vice with a full nut.

Value-wise - there's a pretty huge range of prices on the used market, I have seen these things for sale locally for anywhere between $50 and 250 - in a huge variety of conditions. If you're looking at one I'd make sure that the screw and nut are not substantially worn, as they're not at all like what is in the current Dawn vices and may not be available new from Dawn. Preferably find one without vice jaws that have been welded on, too...

If you don't need huge clamping force and are chasing a vintage Australian made vice, the quick release vice is worth looking at - it's certainly a nice added level of versatility.
