Today I am taking a closer look at a bench drill press made by Alfa Machine Corporation ASR. Update 2020: I have found that they are indeed made in India (ASR is an apparently abbreviation for the very large rail station in Amritsar), as I was sent photos of another copy which has Amritsar printed on the front badge that is missing in the example shown here. Extended Google searching for Alfa Machine/Machinery Corporation had led to Amritsar but without the badge provenance it was a little hard to conclusively determine that. They do seem to still be in operation making drilling machines in Sultanwind – the address I can find online is 3, New Kapoor Nagar, Sultanwind, Amritsar – 143021. They are a different company to Alfa Machinery Maker and Alfa Machine Company, Inc.
The drill in question:
The plate on the side was sadly totally blank:
A few closeup details:
Depth gauge:
Motor removed:
The motor on the drill was a Crompton Parkinson 1.5hp unit – probably not what it came with from the factory, and it’s a pretty common brand to find on a vintage drill press in Australia.
This handle clamps the head to the column:
