How do you find parts for your motorcycle? Back in the day the parts diagrams with correponding part numbers were stored in microfiche but nowadays most of the common models can be found online. Today we are demonstrating using the online parts seller CMSNL, and we will be using a 1980 Honda CX500 Custom from the USA as our example bike, and we are looking for the gasket that goes around the spark plug well.

You can click on any of the images to make them bigger (opens in another tab).

Navigate to CMSNL:

On the left hand search window, enter your model number - here we are using CX500 as our example:

Hit enter and you'll see the model results page:

We are after the 1980 Custom model from the USA so we need to hit the next page:

Click on it and you are taken to that model's page - if you are intending on doing a lot of part searching perhaps bookmark this one:

Scroll through the list until you find the location you are looking for - in our case we want the seal that goes around the spark plug well in the cylinder head cover, so we scroll down to that - top left in the below pic:

Click on the photo and you will see the drawings from the parts manual:

The part we are after today is #4 on the drawing, and if we scroll down we can see the name of it:

"Plug hole gasket". That one is still available new and can be ordered from CMSNL, as you can see. To find out the part number for that part - to search eBay or go looking for cross-compatible bikes, for example - click on the "More Info":

The part number is up top there - and if you click on "Click to view the product page" you'll see it in the more familiar Honda formatting for product codes (12329-415-000 - see this page for more info on product codes):

From here you can order the parts or use the discovered parts numbers to search for other models or other parts houses for stock, or even call your local Honda dealer to see if they can get it in. Anything bought directly after clicking on the CMSNL links on this page will help support the site!

The parts lists on CMSNL will often include things like the O-ring sizes or bearing sizes, which you can take to a local O-ring or bearing supplier to see if they can get something compatible.
