What size to make a custom exhaust header?

Murray of Murray's Carbs recommends making the pipe closest to the head 1.5" and then 12-14 inches down the pipe change to 1.75". Going with the smaller pipe at the top of the exhaust helps prevent the loss of exhaust gas scavenging caused by using larger pipes than stock - which are double walled, so thinner than you might expect.
