A closer look at the water pump impeller – Honda CX500, GL500, CX650, GL650

Let’s take a look at the water pump impeller. This sits at the back of the engine, bolted to the rear of the camshaft.

In the middle we have the splined part which mates to the end of the camshaft:

Inbetween two of the blades you will notice a little hole that is drilled from front to back; this is to help break suction and prevent cavitation;

There’s usually a rubber seal here:

Fitted loosely in place (this one is old):

The “polo mint” piece of the mechanical seal fits inside the rubber piece:

We’ll do a comparison piece between the 650 and 500 impellers shortly.
