You'll want to be looking at the underside of your disc brake caliper:

Looking at it from the underside, you should be able to see your brake pads pressed against the rotor, one on either side. The ones installed on this bike (stock from the factory) are silver on the edges.

Look at it squarely on and you can clearly see the wear limit lines marked on the pads:

Once the pads are worn down to these lines, it's time to change them out.
