How to change the engine oil filter - VE and VF Holden Commodore V6 LE0 LY7 engine

OK, so you have jacked up your Commodore and have started the oil draining out the bottom of the sump pan. Now it's time to take out the oil filter so you can replace it with a new one. The oil filter is a cartridge type and is held in a housing on the left side of the engine - the right side if you're facing into the engine bay:

Take a 24mm socket:

Loosen the cap:

If you have a rag handy put it in one hand and get ready to put it underneath the cap as you lift it, as oil will probably drip out. Better on a rag than across your engine bay. Lift the cap away and the filter should come with it:

You can pull the filter away from the cap and dispose of it appropriately:

For a replacement filter we use the Ryco R2605P (a quality filter, available inexpensively on eBay AU):

If you want the genuine article the part number for the oil filter + associated O-ring is 92149006 (available on eBay AU). The oil filter comes with a new O-ring for the filter housing:

Remove the old one with a pick or similar tool, being careful not to scratch the housing:

Install the new O-ring:

Press the new filter on - orientation doesn't matter:

Place the oil filter and cap back on the holder:

Spin it on by hand to begin with to ensure that you don't cross-thread it. Once it is seated torque it to 25 Newtonmetres:

Now that that's done, let's go back to the underside of the car to put the sump plug back and fill it up with oil.
